Chinamax — one Chinese saying a day, for iPhone.

These terms govern your use of the Chinamax iPhone app. By installing or using the app you agree to them. If you do not agree, please delete the app.
What Chinamax is
Chinamax shows one Chinese saying a day, with pinyin, an English translation, a character breakdown, a recorded reading and the passage it comes from. It is made for cultural and language interest. Translations, glosses and the notes on each passage are our editorial work: they are written to be useful and honest, but they are interpretations, not scholarship you should rely on for academic or professional purposes.
Your licence
We grant you a personal, non-transferable, non-exclusive licence to use Chinamax on Apple devices you own or control, as permitted by the App Store Terms of Service. You may not copy, resell, reverse-engineer or redistribute the app or extract its content in bulk.
Images you export from the share sheet are yours to post and send as you like.
No account
Chinamax has no accounts and no sign-in. Everything you do in the app stays on your device. See the Privacy Policy.
Chinamax Pro
Some of the app is free forever: today's quote, the audio, the character breakdowns, reminders, and a set of free themes and app icons. Chinamax Pro unlocks the full archive, the story behind every quote, and every theme and app icon. It is sold as an in-app purchase in one of two forms:
Lifetime — US$19.99, once
A single payment. Nothing renews. It stays with your Apple Account, so you can reinstall the app or move to a new iPhone and restore it.
Monthly — US$2.99 per month
An auto-renewing subscription. It continues until you cancel.
Prices are in US dollars and shown in your own currency in the app; Apple sets the equivalent price in each region and may change it. No free trial is offered.
For the monthly subscription:
- Payment is charged to your Apple Account when you confirm the purchase.
- It renews automatically for one month at a time unless you turn off auto-renew at least 24 hours before the end of the current period.
- Your account is charged for the renewal within the 24 hours before the current period ends.
- You can manage or cancel it at any time in the Settings app: tap your name, then Subscriptions. Cancelling stops the next renewal; the current period runs to its end.
- Deleting the app does not cancel the subscription.
Purchases and refunds are handled by Apple, not by us. To ask for a refund, use reportaproblem.apple.com.
Restoring a purchase
Your purchase is tied to your Apple Account. Tap Restore Purchases in Settings, or on the Pro screen, to bring it back on a new device or after reinstalling.
Content and attribution
The classical Chinese texts quoted in Chinamax are in the public domain. The selection, translations, glosses, notes, design, artwork and software are ours or our licensors'. The typefaces are used under the SIL Open Font License, and the licences are listed in the app under Settings › Attribution.
If you believe something in the app is misattributed or infringes your rights, write to hi@chinamax.app and we will look at it.
Acceptable use
Do not use Chinamax to break the law, and do not attempt to interfere with the app or with other people's use of it.
Availability and changes
We may add to, change or remove parts of the app, and we may add to or change the corpus of sayings. We do not guarantee that the app will be available without interruption or free of errors.
Disclaimer and liability
Chinamax is provided "as is", without warranties of any kind to the extent the law allows. To the extent the law allows, we are not liable for indirect, incidental or consequential loss arising from your use of the app. Nothing here limits any liability that cannot be limited by law, and nothing here affects the consumer rights you have where you live.
Who you are agreeing with
Chinamax is published by Derick Tsang, an individual developer based in British Columbia, Canada. "We" and "us" in these terms mean him.
Governing law
These terms are governed by the laws of the Province of British Columbia and the federal laws of Canada that apply in it, without regard to conflict-of-law rules, and the courts of British Columbia have jurisdiction.
If you live somewhere else, none of that takes away the consumer protections that the law where you live gives you and does not allow to be signed away, and it does not stop you bringing a claim in your local courts where that law lets you.
Changes to these terms
If these terms change, the new version is posted on this page with a new date at the top. Continuing to use the app after that means you accept the new version.
